Any one know what this is?

No idea what this is, it's grown to 5ft tall, we have two others coming up to the same height. No flowers just these.

    could be an Amaranthus

    Definitely not Amaranthus. We have that and it's not that. But it is a puzzle.

    No we don't. It's on our allotment. There's two in our herb/flower bed and one in the adjacent flower bed on the other side of the path. We thought it might have been from one of those mixed bulb packets. The base of it is as thick as my arm! We did plant some cosmos and dahlias but the cosmos never came up...

    It's not cosmos or dahlia ... and not a bulb either ...

    The squirrels & Magpies are always burying things on our allotment site. Have a look around & see if anyone else is growing something exotic. It still could have come from bird seed, from a garden some way off.

    It's just the fact that there are 3 of them, equal distance apart, which makes it more intriguing.

    A very knowledgeable friend has agreed it's an  Amaranthus  ... possibly 

    A. powellii (the flower buds will elongate with age) or A. retroflexus     ..... they've worked at Kew so know their stuff  :)

    After a quick Google, your friend is probably right. Will be interesting to see how it grows, apparently they can grow 9ft tall! Thanks for the help.
