    Have you been spreading home made compost on that bed?  Have a look at the base of the plant and see if it's growing out of an avocado stone.   It looks to me like the avocado seedlings that pop up from our garden compost ... with vine weevil damage.

    It is near the compost pile. It never occurred to me it could be an avocado! Thank you.

    They pop up every year here ... sometimes in the most unexpected places when we've been spreading compost mulch around  :D
