Aubretia - cutting it back

I planted some Aubretia earlier in the year and it was gorgeous when it flowered, really cheered the garden up in Spring. I gave it a haircut once it had flowered (taking just the old flowers off the top) but since then it's been looking a bit ugly, it's still very green but also looks a bit half dead at the sane time. Should I have trimmed it (remove some of the actual plant, reduced the ground surface area  as well as the haircut of the top?

  • Most people cut them back quite hard removing about 50% of the plant ... I wouldn't do it now or it'll reduce the flowers you get next year ... but after flowering give them a radical chop ... it'll look bare for a week or two then it'll green up and grow the flowering shoots for next year.  :)
