If you have a new plant, just planted this year, you should concentrate on training it to the way you want it to grow. Honeysuckles tend to thicken and grow almost like a shrub if not trained or left unpruned for a few years.
You can tidy up and cut back any over long shoots in spring time. But generally, not always needed.
