What is this?

Hi,
I am new to the forum so hope this is a legitimate use of the hive knowledge.

I have a medium sized tree in the garden which looks to me like a catoneaster. However, in the 4 years I have been here we've had no flowers and no fruit. Can anyone shed light on this for me? Thanks.

You're right with a Cotoneaster. maybe lacteus or similar. Has it been cut back hard? They take ages to get back to flowering after a severe hack

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • It gets a fairly brutal trim about twice every year in the growing season as it's so vigorous and in a pretty small space. I was planning to properly pollard it in the winter. Is that a bad idea?

Going by nutcutlet's post it looks as if it will never flower if you pollard.
It's obviously wrong tree for your space so either take it out and plant a more compact tree or keep pruning and grow a clematis or 2 to give colour.
  • Oh yeah! Great idea. Or a pasiflora perhaps. Thanks

A vigorous plant in a small space, that's a bad idea for sure. ;)

Not sure about a pasiflora never grown one but I only suggested clematis as if you get the right one it can be cut down in the spring so you could pollard your tree without the climber making it difficult
