Allotment

so I’ve decided to go for it! I’m getting an allotment. I’ve went for the smaller one to ease me in but it’s a complete blank canvas and don’t know start designing. Anyone have any tips and/or places for inspiration?

  • Wow, I think you've struck lucky there compared to what most new allotment owners see!  Looks like the soil is in good nick and the ground has been covered for a while so very few weeds.  :)
First decide what sorts of things you want to grow.  If traditional veg then dividing it into 4 equally sized sections will allow you to follow proper crops rotation.  When planning planting areas and paths, try to keep the longest arm reach from a path to the far side of a bed to about 3-4 feet which will allow you to easily plant, tend and harvest without stepping on the soil very often.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

That looks nice and clean but i would wait until October and then rough dig it, and leave for the winter weather to break it down and kill the weeds

Well done, it's a fine plot.  I'm sure you'll have many hours of pleasure there.  Will you have a flower patch there?
  • I think it’s a fairly new plot. She mentioned something being on it before. I defo want to make sure it’s all ready for next year, was thinking green manure but not sure what kind, it’s quite far back from the main gate so getting any sort of rotted manure etc will be tough!  I’d love to do a mixture of flowers with fruit and veg. Definitely think I’m lucky!

    Listen to BobTheGardener

Read " No Dig Gardening " by Charles Dowding before you embark on a life time of pointless and soul destroying annual digging.

If you do you can sit in your chair and watch others cuss and sweat in September / October

  • I definitely love the sound of no dig haha! I seen on Beechgrove garden it actually is a great way of doing it. I’ll have a read of that. Going to pick up the keys later tonight. Can not express how excited I am. I’ll definitely share pictures.
