Some advice please - Jasmine clotted cream

sabeehasabeeha Posts: 344
Good morning!

I have this plant (it was there when I moved into the house) planted against a sheltered wall.

I only had one flower on this plant in the month or so I have been here, and today I saw the leaves were looking a little lighter green in colour?

I have just realised (after having a quick google) that this plant likes to have some sun in a sheltered spot. My garden faces north-west, and although it is not dark, there is no direct sun, and this plant being on a north-west facing wall, is probably causing it to grow poorly?

The issue is I don't have a sheltered southerly facing wall! My front garden faces south east, but is has no space for it.  I could grow it on a south-west facing wall on the side return of our house but I would need to put it in a pot.

I would like to ask anyone who has experience of this particular plant, how successful they have been in planting this in a pot.  And when is the best time to move it, and any tips on making it successful.

Thank you very much :)

Also, the only wall I have in mind for this plant is exposed - there aren't any plants there.

Hi I tried this plant in a pot but didn't do too well so gave it to a friend who had right conditions and it's lovely, in its 3rd year covered with flowers and very vigorous. Maybe you should do the same and pick a climber that suits the situation. I will add that I mostly grow stuff in pots and this jasmine was one of my few failures. Sorry!

    Thank you for your reply!

    Oh dear :(

I am actually not exactly entirely sure what 'sheltered' fully entails - if it is against a wall, would that be sufficient?

And what if it is put in a deep pot?  :|

    *hopeful*

In regards to sheltered wall, that's the classic idea of growing a Jasmine, but if you don't have that type of space, you can find a spot where you can train it upwards and then over shrubs or onto the tops of any boundary. The shrubs can form a bit of shelter. They naturally want to go upwards, so you will have less leaves on the plant until it reaches a space with sufficient light and sun. That is another option.

They will not do well in a container unless you can provide something over 70cm in depth and width and I would say that is the minimum. Young plants look thin and twiggy, but they eventually mature, and can form strong roots. A North West facing garden will still have areas with a lot of sun. Particularly areas at the back and right sides furthest from the property.

We have this growing on our Pergola. It is not particularly sheltered and definitely not against a wall. Also this is a very cold garden. Flowers reasonably well, at least as well as all the other Jasmines on the Pergola.

Thank you borderline - it is growing upwards, and it has reached the base of the deck which has some spaces in the decking fence part above it - so hopefully it will have more light when it grows a bit more, and maybe it will be ok.

The strange thing is that I can see lots of parts of it where it looks like there were flowers, but I didn't see any grow... weird!

Bergill thank you, that gives me hope - perhaps mine is too sheltered and feeling claustrophobic in the corner where it is!

I saw some small roots showing at the base of the stem, so for now, I have covered the base in some soil/compost and tied the shoots loosely in a more upright position in the hope it will get to more sun.

Thank you for all your comments!
