Grass Not Growing

Hi,

Looking for advice on getting our grass to grow (see pic), we've tried different seed types including bermuda and dense shade but it only seems to grow around the edges near the sidewalk where not under the tree.  Winter rye grows fine every year but we can't get anything to take other times of year.  We've also tried aerating different watering times and amounts.

Thanks!

with reference made to 'sidewalk' I'm guessing you aren't in the UK, where are you living?
  • Sorry I didn't even realize this was a UK forum.  I'm in Arizona in the US.

You don't have to be a Brit, it's just that we know more about conditions over here! Your picture suggests that your grass is struggling with heavy shade from the tree and the building. There is grass on the other side of the street, in full sun. I know it gets pretty hot in Arizona and I am wondering if the mix of heat and shade is too much for it. The tree will take a lot of water and nutrients out of the soil, too. However, I have no doubt that someone more knowledgeable than me will be along soon with suggestions!

I'm inclined to agree with Posy. I think that's a bridge too far for grass in that position.
Perhaps it would be better to try some evergreen ground cover of some kind which will cope with poor soil and dry conditions.  :)
Even here in the UK, with large amounts of rainfall, many people struggle to get grass established if it's near big hedges or trees. In the recent hot weather, most people had grass that was brown rather than green!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
