Patchwork lawn

Hello,
I am growing different grasses, herbs and creeping plants in large trays of different sizes in order to plant out a patchwork effect lawn, and I want to be able to mow the grasses at least. I realise that the most dominant plants will take over in time, but I am wondering if anyone can recomend an unobtrusive means of dividing them that the lawnmower will not have a problem with. I may include some quarry tiles in the pattern which could be used to keep some plants appart, but I want some sort of edging that will have to criss-cross, but still keep each section sealed.
Any ideas and suggestions would be very welcome!

As a post script, I would especially welcome suggestions for ways of addapting re-use/recycle materials rather than buy lots of plastic - I am good at addapting so let me know about non-re-use too, and I'll try to think up re-use alternatives. I know you have some experts on this forum who are good at this kind of thing with better brains than I, so please post any ideas!
