Tony Hiron, they are Hypericum Androsaemum, Tutsan. They are great for cut flower arrangements. A tough plant.

    Hypericum, maybe variety Hidcote.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Looks like hypericum - rose of Sharon? Dug mine out cos it was so hard to control, pretty though.

I cut my Hypericum to the ground in February; nice young shoots and easy to control.

That's what I do @Loraine3. I also get lots of little seedlings and plant them wherever I need them. Great gap filler.

Sabeeha, I was looking for shade tolerant shrubs recently and came across some good suggestions on this:

The Sky Pencil Holly (number 7 on their list) might suit your tall, slimline form requirement?
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

Thank you so much Nollie, that looks perfect - however, I can't seem to find any UK stockists :(

I second Sarcococca confusa. I have 2 and the winter scent (Jan-Feb) from its tiny, white flowers, is divine when you have it near an open window, along a path, near the front of a border...
Mine are in pots but they're equally happy int the ground where they will, over time, grow into lovely bushes.
They are slow growing and don't need pruning, although I have cut one of mine hard back when it had become straggly years ago. It has come back even better since.
The flowers turn into almost black berries.
I have seen large versions of these plants growing in part sun too, which they seem to thrive in, though I have also grown mine in deep shade with good effect (but they grow slower here).
They do like a slow, pelleted feed, like Vitax Q4, particularly if in a pot.
