Penstemon query

This is a single stem of penstemon Blackbird, the plant has been flowering all Summer, the last few flowers on this stem look as though they have reverted to species, has anyone seen this before, is it possible ?

I don't know Richard. I grow several varieties of penstemons and have never seen flowers like that before - but then I probably haven't looked hard enough at them!
By the way I had a few flowers on my new clematis mandchurica in the summer so can't wait for next year.

    I grow several varieties.
I don't know its name, but one starts off the season with pale pink flowers and by mid-June the flowers are pale blue
