I'm not sure about the bugs either. I can't work out whether he is planning on using the compost as a winter hibernation point, or it is just a good food source. He is currently three feet up from ground level. The compost went in for second heat up about a month ago, the level has dropped three inches. It is quite coarse with plenty of air in it.

How lovely, he is not going to starve that's for sure :D
They burrow so I think that it is easy enough for them in a compost heap if they can get in.
Those little white things we have had them in a bin here, I am not sure what they are, but they disappear after a while. I think toad could eat them or easily wipe them off him/herself?
Do they jump slightly? Could they be springtails? (Apparently good).

Thanks for the info about the air, I kept meaning to check why wormies sit around the lid.
