I'm not sure about the bugs either. I can't work out whether he is planning on using the compost as a winter hibernation point, or it is just a good food source. He is currently three feet up from ground level. The compost went in for second heat up about a month ago, the level has dropped three inches. It is quite coarse with plenty of air in it.
How lovely, he is not going to starve that's for sure They burrow so I think that it is easy enough for them in a compost heap if they can get in. Those little white things we have had them in a bin here, I am not sure what they are, but they disappear after a while. I think toad could eat them or easily wipe them off him/herself? Do they jump slightly? Could they be springtails? (Apparently good). https://forum.gardenersworld.com/discussion/3619/white-bugs-infesting-compost-bin/p2
Thanks for the info about the air, I kept meaning to check why wormies sit around the lid.
