Perfect climber for a North Facing wall?

Hello there, I was wondering which climbing plant people would pick for the front of a north facing home? I’ll soon be moving into an off-white painted victorian mid terrace house that has a small porch (the front of the house is north facing and the side of the porch is north/east). The houses opposite are a good distance away, so even though its north facing it seems to do OK for light. The neighbours have a pretty healthy looking rose - though unfortunately I can’t verify what type it is. I’m also not sure on the soil type but will check this out before planting anything. Ideally I’d love a repeat flowering, pollinator friendly, fragrant evergreen …but who wouldn’t! I currently have a David Galway Rose (David Austin) in a pot that will be coming with us but am open to ideas and currently considering a honeysuckle like Belgica. Top picks and tips would be much appreciated.

Climbing hydrangea might tick many of the boxes.

Please say what height and width you are looking for, and what kind of support on the wall can you give it.. thanks...

The David Austn website suggests the following climbing roses - https://www.davidaustinroses.com/eu/specific-situations/climbers-for-north-facing-walls

I have grown Generous Gardener and found it to be strong and healthy and floriferous.  Teasing Georgia is less vigorous and gorgeous flowers too but it grew a lot better when I planted a shrub on the north side of its trellis to protect it from cold winter winds.  A lot will depend on the quality of your soil and, as Marlorena says, the nature and size of teh supports you can provide.

Other roses for north aspects are Golden Showers, climbing Iceberg, Albertine (not a repetaer I think), Danse de Feu, Mme Alfred Carrière and New Dawn but I always found its perfume very faint.

I'd echo Fire's suggestion of Hydrangea petiolaris. While it isn't evergreen, it's absolutely stunning. Beautiful green foliage and white lacy, flat flowerheads, which would look great against the colour of your walls. Self clinging.
The major concern is, how much room do you have? It doesn't sound as if it will be a big space, if it's the porch area only. You might be better with a rose as suggested, as they can usually be kept to a smaller size and still grow successfully.
There are also clematis which may suit well. Some of them are also evergreen. Check out Taylor's Clematis site, Hawthornes, or Thorncroft for suggestions. You can search by type, flowering time, colour etc.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • These are great suggestions - thankyou! The width is approx. 4 metres and it’s a 2 storey house. I’m happy to nail in support :)
