"In Wales you'll also have to cope with their running of the NHS which is less than glorious by all accounts but an important consideration as you age".
Might depend on where you live, but my experience of the NHS here has been excellent.
My view would be Norfolk. Why/ Norfolk is good faming land and it is near to London, so short break visitors would be plenty. Also, in Norfolk there are lots of lakes (broads) and lots of nooks and crannies wher you could buy a suitable property - problably near a village/pub too. From my experience of Norfolk the only way to explore it is on the ground or in a boat, there is simply too much to see. A friend of mine had a small flat in central London - at the time worth about 360000 (now about 700,000). She sold it and bought a grade 2 listed Georgian property, at auction in a Norfolk Village, for 23,000. It had six bedrooms, a very large kitchen, study, pantry, basement and parking. It needed some work, but this was mostly decorating.
Norfolk prices are on the up everybody is going there and so are all the london train lines.
It’s not in the middle of nowhere. You are a five minute drive from the delights of Bakewell with its puddings and tarts (less said about them the better), doctor, vet, dentist, chemist, ironmonger, garden centre, and only twenty minutes from Sheffield.
I do like it loads a lot of work though . My eldest has friends in Sheffield so would be a good place to live if i want him to visit from Ireland.
Okay, I'm on the mid North Wales coast so can't help. Good luck with your decision.
you can a bit what is that bit of wales like . I was always under the impression it was the most anti English part
Not in my experience Nin. I would say the North West of Wales (towards Anglesey) is more a Welsh-speaking area. The coastal counties of Conwy and Denbighshire are mostly English speaking. I live in Rhos on Sea, between Llandudno and Abergele/Rhyl. There is an excellent hospital - Ysbyty Glan Clwyd - in Bodelwyddan.
I moved from Sussex to Llandudno four years ago. Never lived anywhere half so good. All the shops and amenities we need are on the doorstep and we are well served by public transport. Property prices are half of Sussex's. Everyone in our little street is English except one, and she's Irish. Everyone is friendly, whatever their origins. I'm a short bus ride from Tesni in Rhos on Sea, and that's a very nice little town with excellent shops.
nin " . My ambition is to be a hermit and I am happy talking only to the dog. I am making a last Ditch attempt to move somewhere where the people are less focused on things and career status and more on the beauty of nature if i fail then hermit I will be and happily so. Better to be happy alone than miserable surrounded by those you do not like." " he has decided people there are far politer than here He works for the nhs speaks to people all over the country and insists inside the m25 are the rudest." Devon/ Cornwall ( away from the touristy bit,, even by a few miles ) is what you're after. We're 10 miles from Bude and from my garden I can see Dartmoor;25 miles in one direction and Bodmin: 30 odd miles in the other and I can't see a single house.
Holiday lets are not all sugar and cream. We had one, they're hard work and you don't always get the nicest folk staying in them, but we have a large 2 bed bungalow with a self contained annexe and 7.6 acres for less then Hubby sold his 2 bed bungalow in Surrey.

I did consider both Devon and Cornwall but they are so tourist laden I discounted them just cannot be doing with so many people I have a bit of a crowd phobia quite a bit of a crowd phobia
. I know holiday cottages can be work but we are hoping to look at an adults set up as in no kids romantic breaks its amazing how many people now adays do not like or want to be around children especially when on holiday they are also the people with money to spend on breakfast hampers and pre made organic farm fresh meal kits etc etc the formula we have calculated as four cottages allows for enough return to pay some help with cleaning as well.
