Why haven't my pelargoniums flowered?

I have got lots of leaf growth, but as yet (end of August) no flowers...they have been in full sun planted in pots and watered sensibly....is the compost too rich? Any ideas?

Any chance of a photo, or do you know the variety?

Hi Bob - just picked this message up.  They are Atar of Roses, "Cola Bottles" and Princeanum - all of them are still to flower....

  • Hi, Emma. Scented pelargoniums are not very prolific flowerers, they are grown mostly for the scent. Some of my overwinter ones have bloomed quite a lot in spring, but not much after that. If you can overwinter them they might bloom in early spring next year, but they might yet bloom this year as well.
  • Thank you pitter-patter.  That might well be it then!  Fingers crossed they get going - the daliah's have been late this year, so maybe the pelargoniums are doing the same thing!

Some of my pelargoniums haven't flowered very well this year either, whilst others have been really good.  I'm assuming it's due to the weather as there doesn't seem to be any other obvious explanation.

I dont find the ones you have flower much and when they do they’re quite insignificant, they are grown for the scented leaf smell. I’ve got a very hardy one, I take cuttings every year for centre piece for my tubs, but the flowers are nothing so I usually pick them off.

Edited to add... sorry to @Pitter Patter who’s already said the same!

  • Thanks Lyn - that is pretty much what mine look like!  Hey-ho - will pick more carefully next year!  Leaves are lovely - but I was hoping for masses of flowers.
  • As has been said, the scented leaf pelargoniums are usually regarded as a foliage plant ... great in shaded conservatories and similar  .... love them   :)

That one of mine is called Oak Leaf, actually it quite pongs!  It does however, survive all summer and went on into the winter until the snows came,  it’s a very hard leafed one and and roots extremely quickly so I do a lot of cuttings.
