A question on manure.

Getting my new beds ready for bulbs and plants in the not too distant future.

Is it ok to mix fresh manure into the beds with new topsoil before the manure is matured.

It’ll be awhile before I start planting.

Cheers all.

The only fresh manure I have used has been rabbit hutch, with as much sawdust removed as possible.  This was in a new raised bed put in at ground level and then filled with soil/compost so most plants were above it when planted and it had few bulbs. The bleeding hearts and aquilegia loved it but the only problem I could see is if the rotting process burnt the plants if in contact with them. Others may have more knowledge than I on this subject.

    .
No, I would not use fresh manure on any plants, it could burn!

Anyway the bulbs have all their good stored in well, the bulbs and do not need manure, some artificial or FBB fertilizer will do fine!
  • It’s gonna be weeks before I plant just thought I’d give the soil the best start!

    thanks for the advice though.

I don't recommend it if you say it's weeks till you plant things in. Delay your planting for the next six months if you insist on mixing it in now.

The way to mulch is to plant bulbs or bushes, then add well rotted manure to the top and let worms pull it down over winter. Will help to keep weeds down too.
