Roses and Salvia . 2 Questions .

Terry29Terry29 Posts: 58
I have two questions to ask and I hope that somebody can provide me with the answers .

Firstly I have a Rose growing in a large pot that I wish to re-plant into my border , how should I go about this , and when should  I do it ? Should I cut it back before I do it or leave it as is and carry out the usual pruning in Spring ?

Secondly I recently bought a Salvia Amistad from the reduced shelf at Homebase ( £4 - not bad i thought ) primarily to get lots of cuttings from . The plant still has lots of flowers coming through and I don't know if i should plant it into the garden now or just over winter it in it's pot in the greenhouse and plant it out next spring .

Many thanks for any replies .

If you want to plant the rose in the garden, I recommend you just shorten all the branches down to around 20cm in height. It makes your job of planting easier and also allows your rose to settle in more easier too. It's almost September, so blooms are almost over anyway, so the plant can focus on building roots whilst the weather is still warm. You can re-prune again in early spring next year.

Depending where you are, I don't think it is a good idea to plant out the Salvias. Only possible if you have very free draining soil and in a micro-climate. Otherwise, keep in the pot in a sunny spot and take into a cool greenhouse to over-winter, or place against a warm sunny wall to over-winter with some protection to the pot when there is frost forecast.

It is too cold and wet here to over-winter salvias outside, but I plant them out for the summer and lift and pot them, before the weather gets too cold. Amistad can easily get to 5 or 6ft in the border and makes a splendid show. I also do this with Neon and African Skies and rate them both highly.
