Is anyone else having problems with Cosmos Sensation Mix not flowering.   They were planted out in late May and have grown so tall that they need staking.   The stems are very thick and the foliage lush and healthy, but not a flower bud in sight!

Andrea, just a puzzled query - why is your postcode showing on your post?
North East Somerset - Clay soil over limestone
  • Thank you both.   I've no idea why my postcode is showing.   I was asked for it when I registered, but didn't realise it was going to appear on the forum.   I'll try and get it removed if I can.

Send a private message to NoraGW ask her to remove it. You may get lots of visitors if it stays there😀

I've already reported it to the Mods for their attention   :) ... one of them may be keeping an eye on things over the weekend ... otherwise it'll have to wait until Monday when they're in the office.

The site does have its share of glitches.

They do this if the soil is too fertile as already mentioned. I have a plan for next year and that is to grow them in some spent compost with only a touch of feed in pots.

Just so as you know you are not alone, I took this photo a minute ago. I haven't the heart to hoick it out, but I should.

  • Thank you all for your help, both with the cosmos problem and the website glitch.   I really appreciate your advice, help and suggestions.  Too rich a soil does logically make sense, but I have planted them in the same spot as last year when they flowered beautifully.   Also one of the cosmos is in a pot with 3 different plants, which must be competing for nutrients, and that hasn't flowered either!   Will try a smaller variety next year so at least the foliage won't take over the entire borders!

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has had this problem.   We are always learning with gardening!

Last year my cosmos flowered amazingly well all summer and well into autumn. This year, with exactly the same treatment and planted in the same beds they bloomed incredibly late and there have been so few blooms they could be counted on my fingers ... the blooms seemed smaller than in other years too.
I think it wasn’t just me who felt the heat this year ...

  • Same problem  with mine at least a metre tall and few flowers. Some planted into soil some in pots and containers after being started off in seed trays then potted on. Hoping for last ditch autumnal  display.
