Hmm! You can see that the leaves/needles are opposite on a branch...and the next pair up/down are at 90 degrees to the others...the name for this is decussate. see diagram.
Hebe are a good example of this leaf pattern...but I do not believe yours is a Hebe.
It has no obvious veins. ..or any silver markings on top or underneath. That at least eliminates a lot of shrubs. I so wish it had flowers/seeds/fruit/cones...life would be easier. I do not know my conifers well enough to make a suggestion...but it is still a possibility. I will go away and think about it!
Dove, the original one may well have produced something if I let it get higher than I could each to prune it standing on a chair! It's easy to shape so topiarists might like it. Paul, I think you're on the right track. The leaves on mine are smaller that the ones I saw on Google images, but apparently there are many different varieties
Thanks for the info on leaves SS. I'm off to have another look a podocarpus.
There are 90+ species of Podocarpus , as well as several distinct cultivars available . Not all are entirely hardy in the UK . Some will regenerate if cut to 'brown-wood' , and are used as hedging plants in mild areas of the world .
I think you're probably right,Paul . Anyway, I'm glad to have found it again. Now I've got to decide where to put it. I'll leave it in a pot for now and see how much it grows next year. Lorraine, thanks for suggestion, but the leaves aren't the same
