Dividing Japanese anemones?

I was given a lovely gift today of a fairly established Japanese anemone with lots of flowers and buds, which at the moment fills a 6" round pot. My question is can I divide it now or is it best to wait until it has established in the ground and got a bit bigger? I know they spread eventually but would like two clumps in different parts of the garden and if I can divide it will save a heap of money as I've seen they are not cheap to buy!

I'd lift it from the pot and see if it will " tease " apart easily. If it does, then split it, if not, plant it and leave it another year.
