B3 - it depends which perennials you're getting. Things like the above mentioned heucheras, for instance, will survive anything and everything outside over winter - even in small pots. I don't really grow much that's too blousy and flimsy because they just don't do well here. It all comes down to what room you have and what you want to grow though. I'm not very patient to grow stuff from seed, but I do quite a few cuttings and divisions. I'm now overrun with certain things though!
