I will add my 2p worth.
But suspect gulliver doesn't want to know what we all think.

At the beginning Oak trees have a single long tap root ...later it sends out more roots to support the large tree that will grow.
They need a deep root run to be healthy..to grow into full size trees.
If they are in a small pot the roots will just circle round the edge of the pot.
My understanding is that Oaks do not like disturbance of the roots.
So these young sapling will continue in a tiny pot until they need planting out at which stage the roots will need to be untangled to plant out as single specimen trees.
In to this tangle are the already dead /dying ones ....which can easily spread disease to the remaining healthy trees.
At the very least please move all trees to a very larger very deep container.
The longer they are in this tiny container the worse the strangled roots will get.

    I add a pic's of  tree/shrubs we bought.
We thought we were good at planting trees.....but this is what happened to roots we did not untangle sufficiently at planting time
They continued to grow in a circle ....until the trunk was damaged and the tree blew over.
Nowadays good growers use airpots so that this does not happen.

As previously noted, the proximity of planting isn't a factor in 'survival of the fittest'.

Fair enough. Really not sure now about the initial query at all then. I thought I'd made a reasonable suggestion.
Looking at the response to Lyn's comments - I'll bow out now before this all deteriorates!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
