Tree roots

I planted a young apple tree back last year and have been watering it during its first year especially during the hot weather. Only I noticed today that I can see some fine roots near the surface of the soil. Is this ok or should I do something to help it out?

I'd just chuck a 2" layer of topsoil over the roots. Either the soil has settled or the watering has washed away some of the soil, but I wouldn't worry too much.
