I was thinking of putting the leaves near the pond pot for the frogs to eat. If you don't think they're going to do any lasting damage then I'll leave them for the bluetits instead. I do try not to be specieist and to adopt a live and let live attitude, but I was worried for my rise.
It's fair enough Valerie - you like your plant and don't want to see it spoiled.
Some years these things will be worse than others too, and nature usually finds a balance. You can probably pick off some and put them in a place where other creatures and birds can get a nice meal. If the rose is otherwise healthy, it will cope and come back well next year.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
