Does anybody know what is affecting my Clematis?

I have a Clematis Montana Rubens which over the past few weeks has started wilting and dying in patchy formation across the plant. I thought it may be Clematis Wilt but I was under the impression that Montana’s were resistant to wilt. I have seen wilt before in other clematis and it tends to turn the stems black which in this case it isn’t hence why I am a little puzzled. I have had the Clematis growing happily to a fairly large size over the past 7 years and I am reluctant at this stage to cut it all back before looking into alternative solutions.

As you can see from the second picture the plant looks mainly healthy but its starting to wilt and die in patches.

I have included a couple of pictures with my post which may help identify the problem. Any help on this would be gratefully appreciated.

  • Looks like just a few of the stems are affected, have you tracked them down to ground level, see if there is any damage down there ?

  • I haven't Richard, as its like a plate of spaghetti in there  I have taken a look at the general health of the stems and they do seem OK. I will try and see if I can track them back and see if there is any damage further down the plant.
