Which Wisteria?

Hello, I'm thinking of planting a wisteria to grow against a wall in my garden.

I've been looking at different varieties but I'm finding it difficult to decide.

My understanding, from what I've read, is that the Sinensis (Chinese wisteria) have shorter but bushier flowers and flower earlier before the leaves form so they have a more 'showy' display.

Floribunda (Japanese Wisteria) tend to have longer flowers and flower at the same time as the leaves are developing. But they also have strong autumnal leaf colour whereas the Sinensis don't.

My wall is short and so the Wisteria won't achieve a height to make the most of really long flower racemes, shorter ones will probably suit it better.

Im thinking either a Sinensis 'Prolific' or Floribunda 'Domino' which has short flowers for a Floribunda (20cm)

any advice or opinions much welcomed, thank you

I have just planted Alba (white) this year. From one whip about 7 foot long, reduced at planting in March by 2 foot,  I now have a plant with 5 whips which have just had their summer prune back to 3 foot. It did flower this year, unexpected, only a few about 12 inch long. As you can see they will grow fast and need heavy duty support so hope the wall is solid. If you prepare the area and feed the soil well you should be ok . Hope it goes well

  • I ended up planting a Wisteria Sinensis "Prolific". It's not much to look at, at the moment, especially after I'd hacked half of it off. But excited to see it get going in spring.

Great I've got a Wisteria Prolific , sometimes you can get a smaller second flush in August.
