Huge green caterpillar-any ideas (ID)?

Does anyone recognise this?
Found in the garden
Around 4 inch long, almost an inch thick
Bright lime green
Smooth, no hairs
White and purple stripes
Long black tail

    I think that one is the Privet Hawkmoth caterpillar

    Privet hawk moth, eats privet, lilac and ash.

    We have lots of privet so I guess it makes sense. I am slightly scared of such a monster caterpillar so I’ll put it under the (privet) hedge.

    Magnificent things aren't they?  I remember the first one I ever found ... in a cornfield underneath an ash tree ... I was about 11 years old  :)
