Preparing grass seeding on stony soil

Hi guys,
I've just moved in and I'm trying to prepare to convert the stony garden into grass, but unfortunately, the people that lived here previously, have used it as a dumping ground!

I've spent hours, most days, clearing as much stones as I could, but it appears endless.
I'm going to continue, but I think it's clear that it I'll never get them all up.

I know I'm going to need tonnes and tonnes of top soil, but would I get away with burying these stones, deep in top soil, to seed?

I've cleared the paving stones, rocks, a buried fence post, etc.

I think a few inches of top soil would be fine as long as you have good drainage etc. And have removed most offenders. Looks chalky? and similar to mine! We cleared as you have, removed perennial weeds and put a couple of inches of top soil down. Grass grew fine. We weren’t after anything special just a place for the kids to run really, so we don’t really bother with it much. If you want something more special then perhaps a slightly deeper layer of top soil. Grass is pretty resilient!
  • Thanks.
I'm going to need at least 5 inches of top soil down, to bring it up to level with my patio.

I think that will be fine.
