Bought some lavender what to do now?

techskeltechskel Posts: 37
Hey!
Like the title says I bought some lavender from b&q to put in my new planter (4ft x 1.5ft) as I seem to fail at keeping it in pots (see previous thread 🙄).
Thing is I usually buy my lavenders early summer when they’re bigger. These are a lot smaller & with it being near the end of summer what do I do with them?
Plant them out or pot them & put them in my mini greenhouse?
Any advice is appreciated, I love lavender & was to crack keeping them.

They are tough so stick them straight in the planter.
They may not flower this season but you need to learn how to prune them later

You could put them into bigger pots. I have lots of lavender and they survived the -12 degrees over winter in medium pots on the patio. They were covered in snow! But survived because their roots were dry. Lots of alpine gravel mixed in really helps. I did lose a couple in the ground though. Even though I have sandy soil, I think they just got too wet.
A French friend lives in the mountains with fields of lavender.  She says it can cope with harsh winters as long as its feet are dry!.
I hope your lavender takes off, it's a wonderful plant. Not only for the bees,  but I make little lavender cushions with the dried flowers - smells beautiful.
  • Ah!   That explains why I lost two last winter.   I stupidly put them in the wet side of the garden.   The ones that replaced them have done well this summer but that's because the ground has been dry as a bone for months.  Would it be worth digging them up and potting them for the winter?

    Thanks guys.
I was doing well with two french ones last year but the beast from the east killed them off. I bought two english this year & one has gone. The other is fine, ive just cut back the dead flowers.
Hmmm i might get another planter or trough for these then as the new planter doesnt have any grit mixed just a good layer at the bottom. I didn't fill it with lavender in mind. This was a last min change.
Any excuse to buy more planters or pots!

LauraRoslin, if your soil is damp in normal conditions, it's best to either dig them up and re-plant in a sunny and drier area. Alternately, you can add in lots of grit into the base and also mix more into the surrounding soil and re-plant into that same spot.

Any plants that are still quite small now, would probably do better if dug up and over-wintered in a container kept outdoors in a sunny area.
  • Thanks, Borderline.  I'll do that before the weather turns.
