Amaryllis/Hippeastrum house plant

RubyRossRubyRoss Posts: 124

My amaryllis/hippeastrum is sitting on the window with no sign of its leaves dying back any time soon. It’s been green since November and flowered in April (the aim was December!).

From what I’ve read, the leaves should have wilted by now but they’re as vibrant as ever.

Should I cut the leaves off to encourage dormancy or leave it alone?

  • Amaryllis don't keep to the rules lol,..i have Amaryllis 'Royal Red',..Amaryllis 'Artic White' and Amaryllis 'Minerva',..all in my window and like yours full of big healthy leaves,..i never cut the leaves back as there are times mine flowered around Dec Jan,..then again in Summer,..seeing how unpredictable they are blooming i just keep adding water in very small amounts just to help the leaves keep healthy,..you could cut the leaves back after the blooms have faded so the plant would become dormant,..however mine become dormant without any help from me once in a blue moon whether i have added water or not.

I was asking myself the very same thing the other day.  I've read conflicting advice so not really sure what to do, so I will wait to see if they show signs of going dormant in the next couple of weeks.  Apparently they don't all go dormant.

Thanks for your replies. I think I'll leave it alone and see what happens.

It seems wrong to cut back healthy leaves when it's happy as it is.

I bought one called Charisma before Christmas 2016.
It had 2 large flower heads in the winter, then another flower head in summer and has flowered again this year. It still has leaves and is looking healthy on the windowsill, but I will move it back to the GH and feed it and wait to see what it does next :)
