What to plant under an Oak Tree

I have a North facing garden with clay soil.  At the bottom of my garden over the fence on Council owned land is a large Oak tree which overhangs a fair bit of the corner of my garden.  I have forsythia which grows ok but am struggling to find anything else which grows.  I would love some suggestions for shrubs, large and small.

    It very much depends on how dense the cover is, and therefore how much light and sun the area gets and on how close you would be planting to the trunk. A large tree will remove moisture and nutrients from the soil and block light. In woodland you tend to find Spring bulbs in these situations because they grow and die back before the leaves emerge. Often, even grass will not grow in the shadow. How bad are your conditions?
