New garden

Hi, I am very new to gardening, I have a bed which has some very crispy shrubs but not alot else. I have poor sandy soil.

I had thought to
1 add some organic matter and dig it in
2 buy some perennial plugs to put out next year and some larger shrubs to put out in early Autumn.

I am not sure if it's to early to add organic matter. There isn't much happening so didn't know if I could do it now or do I need to wait a month or so. Would you use well rotted manure? In relation to my plugs... no real idea how to pot them on. Do I put them in a 6cm pot and then a 9cm pot? When would you plant them out? Any companies to avoid?

Sorry for lots of very basic questions. Many thanks in advance .

You might want to wait till we've had a bit more rainfirst but if you have time to get stuck in now, the yes, dig in as much organic matter as you can get your hands on, then you will be able to plant some new shrubs in Sept/Oct. My own thoughts on perennial plugs now is that they are a bit of a faff to keep going over the winter and I am going to wait till spring to buy them in. They soon get going when it's warmer.  Meanwhile you can buy some spring bulbs and plant daffs, crocus etc. in Sept and then tulips in late Nov.  That way, you'll have some early colour in your new garden.  Have fun!

Keep an eye out for "end of season " clearance on herbaceous stuff too. We all love a bargain ( even better if you can split them into more plants )

Sit and think about what you want to look at in the garden............roses......shrubs...........pretty flowers..............anything else
    Low maintenance......gravel areas
Manure..............get it delivered in bags and then chuck it on the soil and leave it for the worms to eat it and take all the goodness down into the soil.
You may need to do this more than once to reduce the amount of sand in each square meter of soil.

Good luck on your exciting journey
