can anyone identify this leaf and what is wrong with it? Is it prunus?

Yellowing of leaves between the veins is sometimes caused by an imbalance or lack of certain trace elements; and that may have been caused by the recent drought.
However - it's not possible to tell from a single leaf. Do you have a photo of the whole plant?

I don't have any other pictures Pete.  I was sitting in a cafe and this tree was above me and every leaf had the same markings.  I agree that the yellowing may be caused by a nutrient deficiency (possibly brought on by the recent dry weather) but the brown patches were on every leaf and they didn't seem drought related as they weren't on the edges or tips of the leafs but again within the veins.  I couldn't see any leaf miners so wondered if the brown markings were a sign of something else.

    'Leaves' not 'leafs' - sorry!

The brown bits are necrosis - where parts of the leaf are dead due to whatever is stressing the plant

So it does sound like the lack of water has caused the markings.  Many thanks Pete :)

If it was near a café was it planted in a 'hole in the pavement'?  If so my first thought would be a drought related problem.

It was Dove.  In a hole in the pavement, surrounded by tall buildings and three floors up.  It's a wonder it was alive really.
