How to trim this?

Not sure what it is, but it builds up into a huge mess in my wall beds.

Prune gently, hard?  When?

    That is either very good at impressions, or it is Mouse-ear chickweed, in which case it needs hoicking, not pruning!

    Yes, looks like a weed to me to so out with the lot.   Didn't know chickweed had mouse ear version tho I've seen that weed loads without knowing its name.

    Just checked, and think I'm wrong about the mouse-ear bit, but I've always called it chickweed!

    That's Common Knotgrass ... Polygonum aviculare ... I've hoed enough of it out of sugar beet fields rolleyes  Pull it out quickly before it seeds.

    Well, it does have a certain charm I suppose ... those tiny pale pink flowers ... but I'd hoik it out tout de suite  lol
