Pruning this rose

BenCottoBenCotto Posts: 4,718
This rose is of some sentimental value and all I could rescue and replant prior to the arrival of builders was this rather scrawny bit. It is, I think, an old fashioned shrub rose.

My question is can I risk cutting into the central stem early next Spring? I want it to have a better shape.

I have, I hope, dealt with the bindweed with a dab of glyphosphate.

Thank you for any advice.

Yes you can do that, next Spring is a good idea... I would prune that down to just above the bud that's showing in the 2nd photo, near the top of the cane...  however, the cane does have some disease issues, you can see by the spots on it, but that need not be a problem... if you are a spray person then you might resort to that next Spring...
