And stick the fork in far enough ;.. most of the depth of the tines if you can ... I've seen people just sort of poke at the surface with a fork ... 'titivating' our gardening neighbour used to call it when he saw people just poking around with their fork ... I use a border spade rather than an ordinary sized one ... slightly smaller and easier on the back if you're not used to digging.

    Thank you all.
OK, I'll get to work on it soon (hopefully). It rained a fair bit for 2 days last week but before that nothing for weeks and doesn't look like the weather forecast is saying it's going to rain much in the next two weeks either. Hope the ground is not too hard to dig!

The area is 10m x 4m so although relatively small, I reckon it will take me a long time to do it all!

It can be quite enjoyable once you get a rhythm  going ... and it's cheaper than a gym membership ... just think how honed and toned you'll be  B)

True, but enjoyable might be pushing it :p

I just spent an hour doing this and only managed a 2m x 2m patch! And my back is starting to ache!  :D

And I think I am 'titivating' as there's no way I can get it all the way to the tine as the ground is too hard or I'm too weak!

This is going to take a long time!
