Yes I agree home grown is best. Mind you the hubby did say he dreamed about cucumbers the other night, so maybe the glut of them is having an effect ...... 😂
It's known as 'reaching cucurbiquity' according to my 'veg patch handbook'.

I hate to think how much our veg has cost us this year as our 3 new veg beds (10ft x 4ft x 2.5ft)cost nearly £500 we think. Don't really want to work out how much!  Runner beans a washout. Sugar snap peas delicious but not many. Sweetcorn looks very promising as does 3 rows of carrots and we're now lifting potatoes. Grew some rainbow chard just because it looked good, but no idea what to do with it - and what does it taste like?  I have a lifelong aversion to most brassicas as was forced to eat boiled to death cabbage by my grandmother and have never eaten it since!

It's quite an earthy sort of taste, spinachey, beetrooty (both relatives) - I really like it

My favourite cabbage meal( actually just about the only way I eat it) is called outlaw cabbage. Minced beef in a sauce topped with part boiled cabbage, then strained and tossed in butter put on top of mince and put in oven for 20mins. Comes out slightly crispy on top. Lovely

I grow flowers, lots and lots of flowers.  I don't mind the expense as the time spent setting seeds, potting on, planting out, cutting for vase/friends and family and just seeing them in the garden gives me such a sense of pleasure, contentment and an almost childlike feeling of wonder and awe...........these feelings are priceless..........and never bore me.   My garden is my sanity, even in my not so sane moments  :D

I enjoy cycling, and a new bike, a few yrs ago cost well over £500, then there was all the accessories and I couldn't  manage without a bike shed.

Haven't counted the cost of growing my own veg, but the GH's were free, paid approx £100 to glaze one.  There was a shed on the plot and lots of garden tools. I have three wheel barrows, all given. I save a lot of seeds but buy some along with plug plants and potting compost although I now mix this with home made compost and make my own feed.

The point is it"s as  much about growing my own as being an enjoyable pastime so the cost isn't necessary important as I would spend on other things.

Thanks for the cabbage recipes - not sure about the chard taste though "earthy" is not one of my pleasures!
