What spider is this?

It dragged an old bin out from the bottom of the garden to be confronted by this hairy looking spider!

Araneus diadematus, the 'garden spider'. Harmless and very helpful friends to have around.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I have never seen a huntsman. I'm not sure I could cope with him creeping about the house, much as I love spiders.

In the UK? I don't think I'd be ok with a huntsman and I've let a garden spider crawl across my eyeball after walking into a web in the greenhouse. :#

  • They do seem to be particularly prolific in Hampshire for some reason I can remember even as a child we seemed to have one in the house all the time and would often find one walking around in the bath, I think that's why I have no fear of them just pick them up and move them on if you can catch them.
