Protecting my veg bed?

I have a little veggie bed what i did with the kids with soke radishes, spring onions and some green manure on the side. I'm afraid the weather is going to get to them after a while

Not sure what you're worried about ... are those the radishes on the left hand side ... they need thinning out.

  • yep those are radishes, i thought that myself to be honest... believe it or not...i actually pulled a few out. with the kids sowing them, they got them everywhere  so nothing to worry about? and i will make sure i thin the radishes out, how many would you say aim for in say a foot square

You still haven't told us what you're worried about.  From what do you think they might need protecting?

Have you kept the seed packets?  They usually have instructions about thinning.

as i said in this bit... the weather.
the packet doesnt say much that i really understand. i know thinning out means pulling a few so they dont have to compete. but i really dont know much about veggies as of yet... my kids wanted to do some veg so i bought some veg seeds :D
  • I would thin them to about an inch apart I know it seems a waste but they will benefit from doing it and should grow into decent size quite quickly

With regard to thinning out, how many will you eat in a week? Thin out accordingly.
A tip for next time, sow a small pinch of seeds every week, they you will have a succession, you will have all of yours ready to eat in one week.  Same with lettuces, no one can eat 100 lettuces in a week.

thanks lyn, I iv been wondering what sow in succession meant! now I know... I guess its kind of like perpetual harvesting? its common sense really isn't it.

It's only common sense with experience @freddyblack1993! Seed packets are far too small give proper information, bit like newspaper headlines - they often don't make sense either.

That is why a good book is so useful, I found one I understood and still use it. It is very old so I top up with help from the lovely people here and use the Internet for pictures.
