@MrsGarden. Know what you mean about remembering what will grow and what will not. We have learned the hard way to read labels carefully and avoid the ones which say 'Needs a sunny, sheltered site' , something we do not possess is shelter and anything even remotely tender just gives up the ghost on us.
I too get frustrated with my hard, rocky thin clay soil, every time I want to do a new area I have to gird my loins for the very hard labour to come and stretch the budget to buy the huge quantities of organic material required to make it workable. We had mega excavations to put in a new septic tank and drain field last year and the huge rocks that came out were unbelievable - now the ‘topsoil’ is hard-packed subsoil and the grass and even weeds refuse to grow back so thats yet another thing to tackle this autumn. I do take pride in what I have achieved though and really enjoy looking at my flowers. Wine for fortification and cake for energy needed on a regular basis!

Garden Noob - You've had me out in the rain planning, but all the plans turn into an island bed so it'll stay as it is complete with frustrations. --PS how do you do this (to alert people i assume)? @Garden Noob--??
@MrsGarden If you want to 'tag' someone, ( as it's called ) you jus type the @ symbol before their name and it alerts them. If they have alerts set. I have never got it to work if someone has a space in their name, but that might be me doing something wrong.
@MrsGarden I'm glad to hear I've inspired you to consider another project But don't be greedy - post some pictures so we can chip in too
Now's the time to get started... You can make some crude changes in the Autumn, plan the detail over the Winter, then it's full steam ahead at the first sign of Spring! 🚂
Ok, I have a plan! There was a brick path, interspersed with camomile from the lawn to the bench. To the left was very dry (tree pruning planned), to the right everything is probably coming out - hence room away from trees and open to a bit of rain if rain ever comes! The area will make two beds, the back of the lawned bed will be roughly along the line of the bench and terracotta pots. The other side will be for the 'in progress' summer house. Wish I'd waited to tidy up a bit before the photo! Anyway, it's the bones of a plan. The lawn can be reshaped to increase the depth of planting I'll start at the back and dig out as I move forward. Think the boundar will be tall grasses then shrubs (hydrangea, weeping cherry) then see what happens, cottage perrenials etc.
Oh file is too large for photo....hmmm...back soon
