Tomato plant damaged through main stem.

Hello

One of my tomato plants has been snapped off through the main stem approx 3" from the root.  It has several trusses of fruit on it, which are yet to ripen.  Is there a way of saving the plant long enough to allow the fruit to ripen? Thank you.

Hi Rebecca, if the stem is completely severed I'm afraid its done for. Sometimes it is possible to splint an injury where there is a bit of damage but not if more than 50% of the stem has gone.

Some of the more mature fruit might still ripen on its own, otherwise its green tomato chutney - which by the way is delicious.

If the fruit has turned from dark green to light green it should ripen ... I find putting them on the windowsill works, or really anywhere warm ... some people swear by putting a banana skin with them as the ethylene they exude helps to ripen them, but I find they ripen ok without.

Green tomato chutney is definitely delicious  :p

Sorry to hear that Rebecca. I lost a plant to the wind a few weeks ago. I took off all the decent sized toms and left them in a bowl with a banana and a tea towel over the top, and they’ve nearly all ripened.
