Beautiful butts

Only on gardenersworld can I post that without fear of reprisals ;)

The main down pipe from my roof is placed such that a water butt off it will be in quite a key position in the front garden on the drive.  We’ll be walking past it everyday, the house number will be just above it, etc, so I feel it needs to be quite a looker and perhaps have some kind of planting on it too.

I am also looking at the cheap and cheerful butts for the rear garden, but this one I’m hoping will also act as a buffer to the drain when we have the odd brief but torrential downpour like three nights ago.

I’m vaguely thinking oak or terracotta - anything but plastic! We have a 1930s gabled semi if it matters.

cheers TP

There are some very lovely butts out there, but I would say, go as large as you can get away with.

  • I have 2 water butts near the house which have been chosen to blend in with the house colour. They're not things of great beauty but at least don't stick out like a sore thumb (unlike the gas cannisters). They are plastic though.

I have one completely hidden in a pyracantha hedge in my front garden. It was a bit of an effort getting it in there, but it works beautifully now.

They all look terrible so buy a cheap one to the required volume then hide behind a wooden frame.

Nice, it looks fine cause it’s out of the way, matches the building and has planting all round it. Good job.
