I also split my pots of basil once they're a reasonable enough size. For instance- the pot Lyn has there - once they get to around an inch or a bit more, I'd split that in two or maybe even three, and repot each bit.
That’s what I do, but don’t prick out as you would other plants just take the chunk and repot very gently.

Yes - no pricking out Lyn I think you can do the same with those pots you buy in the supermarket too - they're exactly the same thing, but they wouldn't want you to know that, would they? I find they need watered quite often Clari, but other than that,. I do nothing much to them

Mine are doing great this year and I start them pretty much the same as Pete but with seed finely sown over small modules, filled with sieved MPC and perlite, so less splitting to do. This years 'basil farm' (aka potting shed):
Those are from the 'Spice boys' mix from Nicky's nursery. There are a huuuge number of varieties there and the seeds are great value. It's nice to have enough for once to actually grab handfuls of it to make fresh rough-cut 'pestos' etc. whenever I feel like it!

I buy the parsley pot from Morrison but wouldn’t for basil as they are so quick to germinate and I like to grow in succession, I find they do wear themselves out so when they look tired I pick it and dry it. By then another pot or two is ready for eating fresh.
