Planting Acers

RobmarstonRobmarston Posts: 338
Hi, I've got two Japanese maples that have been in pots for about 3 years now.  One is Orange Dream, and one is Phoenix.  They haven't 'grown' much this year, although they are in full leaf.  I believe these two are not fond of being in pots.  Anyway, I have just moved and have wonderful positions for both of them.  As it happens there is a lovely green acer already in the garden that's thriving, so I know the conditions are right for them here. My question is, should I get them in the ground now (which I'm itching to do) or wait until winter/spring to plant them out?

I think the main thing you need to consider is the soil where you're going to plant them.
If the soil is really dry I'd suggest waiting until we've had some decent amounts of rain and the weather is cooler.
I think if it were me, I'd give it another month or so. You want them to get off to a good start and Sept/Oct are good planting months for potted trees.

same here, we want to plant an acer in the ground (orange dream also) and i just know it's best to wait until more rainfall is due, but whilst ground is still warm enough for a few months root growth.
