Hot countries often grow the star jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides. It needs heat or a south facing wall to do well in this country. Jasminum officinale flowers well for me here in the Midlands.
It's very likely the Jasmine you see growing in Italy might be Jasminum Grandiflorum. The flowers are a bit bigger and scent very strong. Not hardy in this country, but can be over wintered in a conservatory in the colder months.
Thanks Hazel. I bet mine won't flower this year then. It looks beautiful. My mum was a keen gardener but sadly died a few years ago so I am trying to keep her garden going. She must have planted it and it didn't thrive till now. I've only got a yard but she had so many perennials. Most of which I have managed to keep alive. Everything is in pots. It's amazing. Thanks everyone for your advice. I wish I had been on a few years ago.
