This is not uncommon Anthony. If you know your soil's pH reading (anything above 7 being alkaline and below 7 acidic) this can govern the colouring of your hydrangea (I'm assuming its a mop head type) . Red hydrangeas will go blue if grown in an acid soil and vice versa. If you add lime to the soil around your hydrangea it should go red once more.

Sorry to bother everyone again but I`m a veg man not plantman and this plant (yuka?) was inherited with the garden in cornwall,it has speared me through demin jeans and a leather jacket and drawn blood and now it`s done this after two years?Pink flower which came out seemingly overnight? wow ,thanks again for swift response.I shall research and will snip the ends off.I thought I might damage the plant but frankly it would be worth it.It is a formidable weapon that has punctured me far too often,and yes it is beautiful.First year I`ve seen a flower on it. just like the New Zealand flax flowered last year with 10/12/ft tall flower spears.Nothing from that this year. Mine is doing the same. Yucaa gloriosa variegata is sending up a flowering spike. It is also known as Spanish Dagger. I have mine at the back of the border.
thanks for replies..going by it`s lethal ability,I`ll have it moved close to a low wall.Enter at your peril.Apart from drawing blood it causes a reaction with the skin and results in serious itching!Very pretty though.

Hydrangea colour depends on which one you have and what soil you have. Some go pink in alkaline soils and acid in blue. I have one in what turns out to be neutral soil with a hint of acidity so can't make up its mind and is a murky purple. Its neighbour, also inherited, is deep red but also a different variety.
