Can you tell what climber this is? (looks dead)

sabeehasabeeha Posts: 344
Hi!

I have this growing on a west-ish facing wall - is it entirely dead? Or can it come back? Im not even sure what it is, the trellis it was growing on has doubled over and is half separated away from the wall... possibly impossible to identify?

Thank you

Any sign of any leaves at all ... dead or alive?  Any sign of new shoots coming from the base?  (I'm wondering about a very sad and neglected wisteria ... )

If the answers are no, you could try giving it a few buckets of water every couple of days for the next couple of weeks and see if that triggers any growth ... if nothing happens I'd dig it out.

Absolutely nothing! I'll try what you suggested.

It might be a clematis plant. They do die down and can look pretty dead but come back again, though yours, if it is a clematis, looks as if it might be dead. Try lots of water as Dovefromabove suggests. You never know!

If you scrape bit of the main trunk with your fingernail, is there any sign of green? If it's brown, l would say it is an ex-wisteria.(or whatever it is !).

I think I would cut the whole thing down and replace or repair the trellis.   Water as Dove suggests and if it doesn't start to grow by autumn, dig it out, refresh the soil and plant a new climber.

If it does happen to be alive, you probably don't want the main stem growing in between the drainpipe and that thinner pipe (gas or water?)
I think I would chop it back below the pipes, and if it does grow back, train it in front of them. If the wood is dry and brittle that far down, it's probably a goner (sorry).

Redmaple thank you - I will give it lots of water and see what happens - I can but hope

Annie I'll try that and see what I get

Obelixx it looks like its been slumped for some time, as the trellis has curved? I will try to fix it though, and start again.  It will be the first time I have planted one!

Jenny I didn't even think of that  :open_mouth:

Thank you hostafan1 and nutcutlet - off to google those :)
