IME, all it takes to ripen tomatoes is time. I once took a lot of time and trouble wrapping them individually in newspaper and emptied a drawer to keep them in because I'd heard that was what you do. I then spent a lot more time every day or two, unwrapping them to check for ripeness and re-wrapping those that weren't ready yet, which was most of them. Nowadays I just line them up on the window sill, which seems to work just as well.
