Japanese Anemones - Looking very 'leafy'?

sabeehasabeeha Posts: 344
Hi!

I think I have some japanese anemones in my garden.

In the shaded side of my house.

They dont seem to have many flowers, but seem to have huge leaves...

Is this normal?

I'm not sure I even like the look of them.....

Thanks!

The flowers will come ... don't worry ... not quite time for them yet ... they're lovely in shady patches in the autumn when there's not much else flowering and you'll forgive them for their big leaves .   :)  They might be grateful for a good drink ... it'll help them produce decent flowers.

I also have them on the North side of my house, and they do have large leaves, and they flower well. I have been trying to remove them, partly because they invade my lawn and partly because I want something different. I will probably plant Thalictrum in their place - they seem to tolerate shade, they look better when not in flower,  and are not invasive.

So they just need watering then, ok thanks!

I had some variety of anemones in my other house, they had smaller leaves, and long pretty flowers and these ones put me off a bit as they look overcrowded and the leaves are really big! But yes, come autumn, will probably forgive the leaves :)

Alan Clark3 They are on the side of my house and restricted where they are planted, so dont have the same problem as you! I will wait till autumn to see how they look... I have just moved house and so at the moment, I just need to determine what everything is and maintain things for a while before making my own mark :)

They're as tough as old boots, mine are just coming into flower.
I've had a patch behind my fish pond for many years.
I've never watered them or fed them, the sun bakes them and they still spread quickly.
    So reliable and undemanding

Pete8 They look good, I guess the leaves on mine don't look very healthy at moment!

I think yours look fine, some of the leaves on mine are bit marked etc. Nothing to worry about
Mine are in full sun from late morning to sunset, get no care and they're thriving, so they're obviously happy there.

Mine look like that too sabeeha - so don't worry. The flowers tend to be from this time of year until about September or so  :)

Some people find them invasive and others don't. I don't, but that may be down to my conditions and climate. They prefer a bit of shade and damper ground, but, like many plants that prefer those conditions, they will grow well in sun if they don't dry out too  much. You can see that Pete's are very happy.
This year has been more difficult in lots of areas - just because of weather.

I've noticed the flowers on mine seem smaller this year... another result of the weather I guess...
