Millie I believe there is a block button somewear oh yes and I call them thistles as a general term only go for the name if I want a particular one.
And like most people here I use a common /name I know them by for all the plants. i.e a pea, bean, etc etc if someone asks me the make if I know it I will tell them.
"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in."
wow, did I cause this by simply pointing out that the correct name for her plant was an (and to use the correct biological name- not purely Latin, biological names are usually a mix of Greek and Latin, if you want to be really, really pedantic) Echinops, not a 'thistle'.
personally I would have used that information to show off to my friends that i knew that proper name for a plant, not get on my high horse about elitism.
do you want me to add my name to the list of 'offenders' now, or would you like to have a cup of tea first??
oh and i'm 37 years old, not quite pensioner status just yet.
Mrs Glaze, I totally agree I have been gardening for 50+ years but still consider myself an amature, but since being here have learnt more about the correct plant names than in all that time blush:
Have to admit I never really took that much notice of the botanical name I knew what I liked and that's how my garden grew.
It's great that so many people from the complete beginner to the very experienced amatur able to exchange views and experiences.
